Sam Bird swept to his first victory of the 2016/17 Formula E season on Saturday as the all-electric series hit the streets of New York for the first time.

DS Virgin Racing's Bird was able to pick his way through from fourth place on the grid to score victory in the first FIA sanction event in New York, finishing ahead of Techeetah's Jean-Eric Vergne.

Bird jumped Vergne off the line before then passing Alex Lynn and Daniel Abt through the first half of the race, pitting from the lead to swap cars at mid-distance.

Bird came under pressure from Vergne during the closing stages and looked vulnerable after a late safety car, but held on to claim DS Virgin's first win of the year.

Vergne took second ahead of Techeetah team-mate Stephane Sarrazin, while Lucas di Grassi was able to cut absent championship leader Sebastien Buemi's lead to 20 points by taking fourth place for ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport.

Loic Duval finished fifth for Dragon ahead of Oliver Turvey, while Red Bull Formula 1 junior Pierre Gasly ended the race seventh on his debut, standing in for Buemi.

Nicolas Prost took P8 for Renault e.dams as Robin Frijns and Adam Carroll completed the top 10 positions.
