Jaime Alguersuari has targeted the 2009 World Series by Renault title in his maiden season after enjoying a competitive first week of testing with the Carlin Motorsport team.

The reigning British Formula 3 Champion joined fellow rookie and Carlin graduate Oliver Turvey in getting his first serious miles with the '09 specification Renault World Series machine under his belt during testing at Jerez and Valencia.

Posting top ten times throughout the week, Alguersuari, speaking at a presentation for Spanish fuel giants and title sponsors Repsol, thinks he is capable of challenging for this year's title.

"This year I am going to race in the World Series by Renault and it will be my first, my debut in the category. The objective is to win the championship because we did the same last season in British Formula 3, and this year with help from Repsol we have some great backing and we are determined to battle for this objective.

"We will be competing in a car that is bigger than last year`s, with 500bhp, that is quite a bit more power than we had. The tyres are also a lot wider, and in general this is a car with features that are very similar to those on a Formula 1."

Should Alguersuari's achieve his objective of winning the title in his maiden season, he will become the first rookie since BMW F1 driver Robert Kubica achieved the same feat back in 2005.
