RP Motorsport will join the Formula 3.5 V8 grid in 2016, promoters RPM Racing have announced on the first day of the series' post-season test at Jerez.

RP Motorsport has a long and illustrious history in the championship formerly known as Formula Renault 3.5 and FIA European Formula 3, fielding the likes of Daniel Ricciardo and Sandy Stuvik during successful campaigns. The Italian outfit is expected to return to the RPM-backed championship for pre-season testing.

Team principal, Fabio Pampado, spoke of his excitement in an official statement.

"I am delighted to be part of the new era for such a historical championship," he said. "Many Formula 1 and professional racers made their breakthrough in the RPM-managed series, and this is a clear sign of a great job done by the organisation from both the technical and competitive standpoints."

The addition of the Italian squad brings the 2016 team haul to 12 with a couple more teams thought to be joining over the coming months. Next year will mark the championship's first year since parting ways with Renault Sport as co-promoters after an 11 year partnership. Adopting the new moniker F3.5 V8, the new series will begin at Motorland, Aragon in April.

"For our team, joining this amazing series is definitely a new challenge, but it will not be the first time for us working with such powerful cars, and we are ready to go."

Spirit of Race is the only new team participating in F3.5 V8 testing this week, inviting 2015 runner-up Matthieu Vaxiviere to the helm of their car.
