Nico Hulkenberg scored a last gasp pole position for the latest round of the GP2 Asia Series at Losail after capitalising on a late red flag period.

His second consecutive pole position, having marked his debut for ART Grand Prix at Bahrain with run to the top spot, Hulkenberg hit the top of the timesheets with just three minutes remaining when the session was begun again following an accident for Hamad Al Fardan.

Up to that point, practice pace setter Vitaly Petrov had resumed his place in front, but Hulkenberg's final effort of 1min 35.741secs was more than enough to knock the Russian from his perch.

Petrov would quickly be bettered by his Campos team-mate Sergio Perez too as many drivers put in their best laps following the red flag period.

Demoted to row two, Petrov will be joined by runaway championship leader Kamui Kobayashi, who recovered from a disappointing practice session to leap up into fourth place, while Roldan Rodriguez was another to make substantial gains on his earlier efforts, qualifying fifth for Piquet GP.

Hulkenberg's ART team-mate Sakon Yamamoto joins Rodriguez on two three, ahead of Javier Villa, Davide Valsecchi, Edoardo Mortara and Jerome d'Ambrosio, all point scorers last time out in Bahrain.

Elsewhere, Alvaro Parente was a solid 13th on his debut for the Meritus team, while Davide Rigon will start 20th for Trident Racing.
