Lucas di Grassi resumed his place at the top of the timesheets as the second wave of GP2 Series testing got underway at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona.

The Brazilian was amongst the quickest drivers last time out at Paul Ricard as he became acquainted with reigning champions Racing Engineering, the Brazilian going on to affirm his status as title favourite by beating Alvaro Parente to the fastest time of the day.

Lapping the Spanish circuit in 1min 27.471secs, di Grassi was a comfortable three tenths quicker than Portuguese driver, who put in a strong showing for the burgeoning Ocean Racing Technology team.

Returning to the circuit where he scored a GP2 victory on his debut last year, Parente was quickest in the morning session before almost matching his time in the afternoon to run di Grassi closest.

Jerome d'Ambrosio was third quickest for DAMS, ahead of Barwa Addax's Vitaly Petrov ART's and Pastor Maldonado, who helped make it five different teams inside the top five positions.

Behind his new team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg assumed the status of top rookie by a fair margin with the sixth quickest lap of the day, while home favourite Javier Villa was the highest placed Spaniard as he continues to impress at the wheel of the Super Nova car.

Davide Valsecchi, Roldan Rodriguez and Asia Series leader Kamui Kobayashi completed the top ten.

Elsewhere, the drivers eyeing the three remaining GP2 seats had a tough day, Davide Rigon (Trident), James Jakes (DPR) and Ricardo Teixeira (Trident) all featuring at the back end of the times in 23rd, 25th and 26th respectively, the latter struggling in particular having proved almost seven seconds off the pace.
