Racing Engineering driver Christian Vietoris has been forced to withdraw from the GP2 weekend at Barcelona as he is still suffering after-effects from his crash in the sprint race at Turkey.

Vietoris went flying off the track at Istanbul Part on lap 3 as he went through turn 3; a brake failure left him unable to do anything about a high speed impact with the tyre wall.

Vietoris is still suffering from headaches from that weekend. He did participate in the DTM race at Zandvoort in the intervening weekend, and while it didn't make the headaches worse it also didn't help matters, and as a result Vietrois has been told to sit out this weekend's round at Barcelona.

"It makes no sense for me to do [Barcelona]," Vietoris told Autosport magazine. "It just isn't a good idea for me to get back in a formula car right now."

Vietoris qualified fourth for the Barcelona feature race last year, but suffered a first turn collision with Jules Bianchi that put both cars out of the race.

Vietoris' seat will be taken at short notice by experienced Portuguese driver Alvaro Parente., who has two seasons' worth of experience in GP2 with Super Nova Racing in 2008 and Ocean Racing technology in 2009. He won his first GP2 race, which coincidentally was at Barcelona where this weekend's round is to be held.

Parente, 26, found himself without a GP2 seat in 2010 and appeared for only two races toward the end of the season, replacing Alberto Valerio at Coloni. However, Parente was dropped for the final race of the year when Coloni signed up James Jakes - who has since departed the series after getting snapped up by the Dale Coyne Racing IndyCar team.

Vietoris hopes to be recovered after five to six days of rest and says he should be okay in time to return for next weekend's GP2 round in Monaco.

The 22-year-old German driver also had to sit out the final round of the 2010 GP2 series at Abu Dhabi after he suffered an attack of appendicitis. That time, he was replaced by Ho-Pin Tung, who is currently in Indianapolis attempting to qualify for the centennial Indy 500 with Dragon Racing.
