Organisers for the GP2 Series have confirmed an 11-round calendar for the 2016 season, including visits to the new Baku Street Circuit in Azerbaijan and an overseas trip to Sepang towards the end of the season.

Having hosted two rounds of the 2015 season, including the season opener, Bahrain is not included in this year's schedule, with Barcelona hosting the 2016 curtain raiser as part of the Spanish Grand Prix on 13-15 May.

From here, the calendar with follow the European F1 rounds with visits to Monte Carlo, the new Baku circuit in Azerbaijan, the Red Bull Ring, Silverstone, Hungaroring, Hockenheim, Spa and Monza.

However, in a surprise move, organisers have announced GP2 will drop Sochi and instead follow F1 for the Malaysian Grand Prix, with the penultimate round of the season to be held in Sepang on 31st Sept - 2nd October. The year will then conclude in Abu Dhabi as before.

"This year again, our calendar is a mix of racing on Formula One circuits in Europe and flyaway venues with the addition of Baku and the return of Sepang - two prestigious tracks," said GP2 CEO Bruno Michel.

"Working on this season's events, we paid close attention to costs control in order to help our teams maintain a sustainable economic model. I believe we have reached the perfect balance and our drivers will be able to learn as many F1 tracks as possible in front of the F1 paddock."
