Pierre Gasly will start the opening round of the 2016 GP2 Series season from pole position after defying inclement weather conditions to top the timesheets at the Circuit de Catalunya.

On a dominant day for the Frenchman having topped free practice, the result also marks an impressive opening salvo for Prema Racing, the Italian team stepping up to GP2 this year following huge success at F3 level

With spits of rain greeting the drivers as the session began, improving conditions would nonetheless see the faster laps come in the closing stages, with title contenders Sergey Sirotkin and then Alex Lynn enjoying a stint at the head of the field late on.

However, it was a rapid effort by Red Bull Junior Gasly that would see him prevail, the highly-rated youngster giving Prema Racing an impressive start to its GP2 endeavour.

Norman Nato makes it an all-French front row, the Racing Engineering driver confirming his impressive pre-season pace to place second, with Lynn and impressive rookie team-mate Nicholas Latifi forming a DAMS lock-out for row two.

Sirotkin slipped to fifth place in the best of the ART cars, with Gustav Malja showing well for Rapax in sixth place, ahead of reigning Formula Renault 3.5 champion Oliver Rowland, Nobuharu Matsushita, Artem Markelov and Luca Ghiotto.
