Borja Garcia topped the times in the first of two sessions on the opening day of the GP2 Series' second winter test, despite only getting comfortable in BCN Competicion's Dallara at the start of the day.

The Spaniard lapped the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in 1min 29.050secs to enjoy a 1.2secs advantage over second-placed Luca Filippi, who again impressed at the wheel of Coloni's car. British F3 champion Alvaro Parente was another to create a strong impression, claiming third place on his return to GP2, this time with reigning champion team ART Grand Prix. The French outfit is the Portuguese driver's third in as many days of testing, having run with DAMS and iSport at Paul Ricard last month.

The top five was completed by two GP2 'old hands', with Clivio Piccione and Olivier Pla taking fourth and fifth for iSport and DPR respectively. Another series veteran, Nelson Piquet Jr, who topped the Ricard test with a record lap, was sixth in the session.

As in France, the 23-car field featured a blend of old and new, although only Felix Porteiro, Pastor Maldonado, Maro Engel and Bruce Jouanny were new from the first test. Porteiro was the best placed of the complete rookies, claiming 14th place for Campos Racing, while Maldonado (Durango) and Engel (DPR) bedded themselves in. Jouanny already had prior experience to call on, having tested with Super Nova ahead of the 2005 campaign, and returned to David Sears team at Jerez.

Michael Ammermuller attempted to banish the nightmare of losing both Italian and European FRenault titles by taking seventh in session for Arden, while Franck Perera (Arden), Lucas di Grassi (Campos) and James Rossiter (Super Nova) rounded out the top ten.

There was no luck for Ernesto Viso, meanwhile, the Venezuelan hoping to build on a solid first test with Coloni, but only making it as far as the pit-lane exit before being halted without completing a lap.
