Alvaro Parente pushed ART Grand Prix back to the top of the timesheets in Wednesday afternoon's session at the Jerez group test, but the promising Portuguese prot?(C)g?(C) could not better the morning pace set by BCN Competicion's Borja Garcia.

The British F3 champion continued his fine run of GP2 testing form by clocking 1min 29.547secs at the Spanish circuit, but remained half a second shy of Garcia's pre-lunch target, even through the Spaniard only managed 1min 30.280secs in the later outing.

Parente was just over a tenth of a second faster than fellow newcomer Lucas di Grassi, the Brazilian another to impress during the afternoon, placing his Campos Racing Dallara higher than it had been for much of the season. Clivio Piccione and Paul Ricard pace-setter Nelson Piquet Jr were the highest placed series veterans, in third and fourth, with another rookie, Franck Perera, fifth for Arden International. Hiroki Yoshimoto rounded out the top six for iSport International.

There was better news for the Japanese driver's former BCN team-mate, Ernesto Viso, too, as the Venezuelan picked his Coloni entry up after a disappointing non-appearance in the morning session to complete 20 laps and clock the seventh fastest time of the afternoon, and eighth overall, putting him ahead of previous Coloni incumbent Gianmaria Bruni, and current 'team-mate' Luca Filippi in the overall top ten.

Filippi joined Garcia in not improving his time after the interval, with Olivier Pla and Giedo van der Garde doing likewise with DPR and DAMS respectively. Filippi and Pla both struggled to get out of single figures in terms of laps recorded in the second session, while Bruce Jouanny continued to bring up the rear on his return to the Super Nova cockpit.
