Adrian Quaife-Hobbs took his first GP2 victory for Hilmer Motorsports in the 21-lap sprint race on Sunday morning in Monza, after polesitter Alexander Rossi struggled to pull away from the grid in the Caterham.

Rossi initially dropped to fifth place, while the usual fun and games at the tricky first chicane saw a clash between Sam Bird (Russian Time), Stephane Richelmi (DAMS) and Julian Leal (Racing Engineering). Leal came out best while Bird was forced to overshoot the chicane, but Richelmi was sent to the pit lane for a new front wing.

It was a bad day for ART, with James Calado stalling on the grid. He gambled by being the first to switch to wet tyres when a shower hit the circuit but the rain didn't last long enough to significantly impact the proceedings and Calado fell two laps off the lead by the finish. It wasn't that much better for his team mate Daniel Abt who was given a 10 second penalty for improperly fitted tyres.

With the track dry again, Rossi took advantage of the fluctuating conditions to work his way back into second spot past Leal and Bird who both had run-offs at the first chicane when the rain was at its hardest, but Rossi was still almost two seconds off the leader Quaife-Hobbs by the time the trio made it to the chequered flag - the sight of which almost sent Quaife-Hobbs spinning off into the gravel in the last few hundred yards.
