Then Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Bruno Junqueira took the pole at last year's Gran Premio Telmex-Gigante Presented by Banamex/Visa in Mexico City with a time of 1:25.941secs (116.703 mph) on the revitalized 2.786-mile road course at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The circuit, which last played host to CART in 1981, wasn't as kind to Junqueira in the race though as he would go on to finish third in the final race of 2002 behind race winner Kenny Brack and CART champion Cristiano da Matta.

Canadian Patrick Carpentier of Player's/Forsythe Racing moved up to finish fourth in Mexico City last year after gridding seventh. The Montreal native comes to Mexico fifth in the championship with 136 points on the strength of his win in Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Round 7 earlier this season.
