FEATURE: How McLaren is saving itself off track if it can't win on it

McLaren Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso will make his first IndyCar test appearance on May 3 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of his entry to the Indy 500 later in the month.

Alonso announced last week that he would be skipping this year's Monaco Grand Prix to enter the Indy 500 for the first time as part of a joint entry between McLaren, Honda and Andretti Autosport.

The Spaniard has little time to get to grips with an Indy car ahead of the famous 500-mile race, but will be given an extra chance to turn in some laps in a test at IMS on May 3.

Alonso has been afforded the test as, unlike fellow Indy 500 rookies Zach Veach, Ed Jones and Jack Harvey, he has not driven on an oval before, nor has he driven an Indy car.

The test will come between Alonso's F1 commitments in Russia and Spain, and will likely tie in with a visit to the Andretti Autosport shop in Indianapolis and some work in the simulator.
