Helio Castroneves took Penske to the top of the timesheets in the final one-hour practice session on Friday ahead of this weekend's 101st Indianapolis 500.

Castroneves turned in a fastest lap average of 227.377 mph on 'Carb Day' as drivers got their final chance to fine tune their cars and try to perfect their setup ahead of Sunday's on-track action.

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso continued his impressive run of form in practice by finishing fifth on Carb Day, recording a best average of 226.608 mph. Andretti team-mate Takuma Sato was second behind Castroneves, while Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon took third and fourth respectively for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Graham Rahal was sixth-fastest ahead of 2016 Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi, with Josef Newgarden, Juan Pablo Montoya and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounding out the top 10.

The only casualty of the final practice session was James Hinchcliffe's Honda engine, which gave up during the closing 20 minutes of the session and forced Schmidt Peterson Motorsports to take the #5 car back to the garage.

The 101st Indianapolis 500 takes place on Sunday.
