Robert Doornbos eased himself back into contention for second place on the season, as he secured himself a row two start in the Champ Car finale at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The Dutchman, who had struggled for pace on Friday, made full use of the two sets of softer Bridgestone 'option' tyres he had saved for final qualifying to put in two short stints, the second of which - taken when the track had the most grip available - proved to be his quickest of the weekend to date, stopping the clocks just as time ran out at the end of the half-hour session.

Although second fastest to Will Power on the day, Doornbos will have to start third on the grid after champion Sebastien Bourdais' provisional pole guaranteed him a front row start. Nevertheless, the Dutchman will still line-up ahead of Justin Wilson, the driver he is chasing for that runners-up spot.

"It is my first time in Mexico, and it is not an easy circuit," he admitted, "We had a few things to sort out from yesterday's sessions, and we improved immensely today. The car was good, and I am happy to be up front - both for myself and for my team. We'll hope for a good result tomorrow, and to finish off the season the way we began it."
