Leading pharmacy retailer Rexall has signed on as the title sponsor for Graham Rahal's #06 Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing entry for this weekend's Rexall Edmonton Indy, giving the previously white machine a splash of colour for the IndyCar Series' only Canadian event.

Financial terms of the sponsorship were not released, but Rexall revealed that it would be dedicating part of its branded space to include the logo of the hometown Edmonton Oilers ice hockey team.

"In 'Oil Country', people are very proud of the Oilers," Rexall founder Daryl Katz explained, "so it's terrific to see the Oilers logo on the car. The combination of the Rexall Indy, the great tradition of our Oilers and Oil Kings junior team and the community-based Edmonton Eskimo Football Club have made Edmonton a world-class sports destination. We're looking forward to seeing an IndyCar sporting the Oilers' copper and blue on the track on Saturday, hopefully taking the chequered flag first."

In the three races run in Edmonton since the airport venue was added to the Champ Car schedule, NHLR has won two - in 2005 and 2007 - with Sebastian Bourdais and now runs the only other driver to have won there, Justin Wilson, who replaced the French ace in the McDonalds car. Rahal, meanwhile, finished third in Edmonton last year.

"We're very happy to have a great sponsor like Rexall on the car for the Edmonton race," Rahal admitted, "Since Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing has won two of the three races in Edmonton, we felt almost like a 'home team' and now this partnership will make it official. I'm a hockey fan too, so having the Oilers on the car is pretty special for me and I think the race fans will enjoy it too.

"The Rexall programme has been coming together for a long time so it is exciting to be working with these companies and especially a guy like Daryl Katz. I'm excited to get to Edmonton and do a good job for Rexall and everyone."

In addition to Rexall's title sponsorship and the Oilers logo appearing, Kimberley Clark, Mars and BMO will join regular NHLR sponsors McDonalds, Dasani and Bosch on Rahal's car.

"Rexall has received tremendous value from its sponsorship of the Edmonton Indy," said CEO Andy Giancamilli, "This sponsorship is a great way to build on Rexall's successful relationship with Indy racing and further our support for an event that has become an important part of the community here."

Rahal's Edmonton livery is expected to be revealed later today [Wednesday 23 July].
