Sebastian Saavedra will return to the #7 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda for the upcoming IndyCar races at Pocono and Gateway, replacing Mikhail Aleshin.

IndyCar journeyman Saavedra raced for Sam Schmidt’s team in Toronto last month, stepping in for Aleshin, having also appeared in the Indianapolis 500 for Juncos Racing.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports confirmed earlier this week it had parted company with Aleshin for the remainder of the season, the Russian opting to focus on developing the BR Engineering LMP1 car for 2018.

Saavedra was named on Wednesday as Aleshin’s replacement for the next two oval races on the calendar, starting with this weekend’s ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

“I am very excited to be back with the SPM organisation. It's another late call to jump in, but I take it with pride after a promising start of our relationship in Toronto,” Saavedra said.

“I'm looking forward to a challenging event as the ‘Tricky Triangle’ can be, and support James Hinchcliffe in his pursuit of championship points. I'm thankful to my sponsors and my continued relationship with AFS Inc.”

The #7 Honda seat remains free for the final two races of the season at Watkins Glen and Sonoma, with Mercedes DTM driver Robert Wickens throwing his hat into the ring for the drive earlier this week.
