Melchester Racing, who enjoyed considerable success while racing back in the 1970s and 80s, are to reform to launch a sportscar programme for the 2007 season.

The team is currently developing plans to run a pair of Radical SR9s - similar to that currently campaigned by Rollcentre Racing [pictured] - in both the Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24 Hours as part of a multi-year programme with discussions already taking place with a number of drivers.

The team will be headed by commercial director Brian Morris, while John Byfield from the Essentially Group has been brought in by the team to secure the commercial backing required for the three-year programme.

"We have some very exciting plans for the team," Morris said. "Given John Byfield's expertise in securing commercial partners for sporting activities, we are confident of having a very strong programme for 2007 and beyond.

"We expect to release more details about Melchester Racing through the summer."
