10 - Alvaro Bautista

Alvaro Bautista finished his first season 13th in the MotoGP World Championship, so why has Crash.net ranked him 10th?

Well, if you'd said at the start of the year that rookie Bautista would score almost twice as many points as team-mate and nine-time MotoGP race winner Loris Capirossi, and have a best race finish four places higher than the Italian, few would have believed you.

Sure Capirossi - competing in his third season on GSV-R - had an unusually bad year, particularly the second half when he was hampered by injuries, but Bautista also came back from a broken collarbone that forced him to miss Le Mans.

The Spaniard proved his best finish of fifth was no fluke by achieving it twice and, although his enthusiasm got the better of him in terms of crashes in the races, he kept pushing to the last lap of the last round - finishing in the middle of a tight three-way battle between himself, Hector Barbera and Randy de Puniet at Valencia.
