Crash:

You’re also part of another successful family, the Aki Ajo family – what does he bring to your career?

Miguel Oliveira:

He’s given me so many chances in my career. My best results have always come in his team – his history in all categories speaks for itself.

He used to be a crew chief so he knows what he is talking about both technically but also with regard to management and this helps everybody in the team. It’s good to have someone who is so expert about the place. He takes a hands-on role and is always in the pit box when I come in.

Crash:

Everyone is talking about Pecco [Francesco Bagnaia] as a future champion but you are now hunting him down – we’ve seen some fast rides from you so far, is it now time to ride for the championship?

Miguel Oliveira:

No, absolutely not. For sure the championship is at the back of your mind and you may think about it at the end of the day but on track? No.

Though I think that any rider who says that they aren’t thinking about the championship is being dishonest, it’s that motivation the makes sure that you try to score points every race.

CrashTV:

I think about it but it doesn’t give me pressure, like so many, I approach it race by race to extract as many points as possible. To basically try not be stupid and get involved in battles that may result in a crash or that kind of thing. You’re risking yourself at those speeds anyway.

Crash:

Whenever the commentators on TV mention you they always say you are training as a dentist – can you really be doing such an intense training at the same time as a full time racing career?

Miguel Oliveira:

That’s absolutely true. It’s quite hard now to combine the two but I try to continue it whenever I get home and am working through it little by little. Maybe it’s something to do after my career.

Crash:

If you’ve got a backup plan like that, does that mean that you didn’t expect your racing to succeed?

Miguel Oliveira:

No, not at all. It’s not a backup plan and I always gave full commitment to my racing career. It’s just something I wanted to do, I enjoy dentistry. I wanted to do it for myself, what can I say, I just like teeth.

Crash:

Lastly Miguel, as you may know England were robbed of the World Cup this summer so could you give us some compensation by letting Sam Lowes through if he’s behind you?

Miguel Oliveira:

[Laughs] Sorry, of course not. If Sam’s behind me, he’ll stay there. Not because it’s Sam, he’s a great rider, but it’s the same for everyone.

Crash:

Thanks for that Miguel!

Miguel Oliveira:

It’s a pleasure.
