Alvaro Bautista lowered his best lap time by 0.678sec during day two of the opening 250cc test of 2009, at Jerez, pushing the Aspar Aprilia rider over half a second clear of nearest rival Hiroshi Aoyama at the top of the timesheets.

Aoyama, riding for Team Scot Honda following the withdraw of the factory KTM team, cut 0.777sec from his best Monday lap time to sit just under two tenths clear of former 125cc world champion Gabor Talmacsi.

The Hungarian edged out fellow class rookie Mike di Meglio by less than a tenth, with Thomas Luthi - second to Bautista on day one - completing a trio of 125cc title winners in fifth. Luthi lapped slightly slower than he had on Monday.

Further down the order, Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot slipped from third to seventh while seven-time 125GP winner Hector Faubel rounded out the field on his 250cc Honda debut.

Reigning 250cc world champion Marco Simoncelli is not present at the test, which concludes on Wednesday.
