Valentino Rossi, who dominated 990cc MotoGP competition, is now tied with Casey Stoner at the top of the 800cc grand prix win list.

Stoner (2007) and Rossi (2008) both have one 800cc world championship to their credit since the capacity change, with Rossi firmly on target for another title this season - the Italian holding a 50 point lead over Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo with six rounds to go.

But until last weekend's Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno, Ducati star Stoner had still won the most 800cc races - Rossi's fifth victory of the season having matched the absent Australian's total of 18 wins.

With Stoner also missing the next two rounds as he seeks to regain fitness, Rossi has an excellent chance of pulling clear at the top.

Rossi already leads the 800cc podium list with 33 rostrums (out of 47 races) compared with 30 for Stoner, although the Australian is still ahead in terms of pole positions (15 for Stoner, 11 for Rossi) and fastest race laps (17 for Stoner, 11 for Rossi).

Reigning six time MotoGP world champion Rossi won 45 990cc races between 2002 and the end of 2006, compared with eight race wins for next best Sete Gibernau.
