Spanish excitement at Jerez raised another notch as home riders again filled the top three places in warm-up for this afternoon's MotoGP.

Reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo led most of the session for Yamaha, but lost out to rookie countryman Marc Marquez by 0.238s in the closing seconds.

It was the first time that Marquez - winner last time out in Austin and level with Lorenzo at the head of the championship - has led a session this weekend.

Marquez's Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa was +0.378s in third. Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Marquez will form the front row of this afternoon's race - when no Spanish rider will be satisfied with second.

Best of the non-Spaniards was again Cal Crutchlow, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 star riding 'battered and bruised' after two heavy falls on Saturday. Crutchlow was 0.495s from Marquez.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati) and CRT star Aleix Espargaro (Aspar) caused a surprise with fifth and sixth places, followed by Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda), Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) and Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Yamaha).

Hard front and soft rears were the tyre compounds of choice this morning.

But temperatures look set to rise significantly in the Spanish sunshine - producing a repeat of Saturday's slippery conditions during the race, when tyre wear will also be a critical factor. Will any of the Honda riders gamble on the hard rear?
