Gresini's Moto3 rookie Lorenzo Baldassarri made his Moto2 debut when he was given the chance to try the team's Suter motorcycle during Monday's post-race test at Mugello.

After just 19 laps Baldassarri set a best lap of 1m 56.23s.

That compares with a 1m 54.045s recorded by Ratthapark Wilairot and 1m 56.553s by Doni Tata Pradita - Gresini's present Moto2 riders - at the test.

Former Red Bull Rookies champion Baldassarri, who at 1.81m and 70kg feels he is too large for the Moto3 class, said:

"It was good fun and exciting. The Moto2 bike is definitely more suited to my size. Unfortunately the Moto3 bike is too small and I am struggling with my weight. Overall it was a nice experience but now I want to focus on Moto3 because we have an intense day of tests planned for tomorrow and then we go to Barcelona, where I want to do well."

Team principal Fausto Gresini explained: "I promised Lorenzo the opportunity to try a Moto2 and we did it today. We wanted to see if the bike was more suited to his size and it seems so. He didn't do many laps but it was enough to understand a few things. I am happy but for now he needs to focus on Moto3 and then we'll see."

Baldassarri finished 23rd in his home Italian Moto3 Grand Prix on Sunday, marking his best result so far.
