Having spent much of Sunday's Italian MotoGP battling with the Honda of Dani Pedrosa and Ducati of Andrea Iannone, Pol Espargaro got to study the contrast in styles compared with his Tech 3 Yamaha.

The rookie, who qualified on the second row, crossed the line in fifth place, 1.5s behind Pedrosa and the same distance ahead of Andrea Dovizioso - who overtook Iannone on the final lap.

"It made me a little bit crazy actually!" Espargaro said of following Pedrosa. "Because when you are following the Honda it is a completely different style. Braking very hard and then in the middle of the corner they are very slow, but in acceleration they go away and you are there still trying to get grip.

"With Iannone the Ducati was amazing on the straight and so strong in braking, but in the middle of the corner it is slower than the Honda. So it was a really difficult race for me until I got into my rhythm.

"It's a good result, we are the first satellite bike and we have to be happy after what was not the best weekend for us."

Following on from a MotoGP best of fourth in France, Espargaro has now moved up to sixth in the world championship, again as the leading satellite rider.

Next up is the reigning Moto2 champion's home round in Catalunya.

"I like the circuit, I like the track and I like the people," said Espargaro of the Barcelona event. "It's near my old home - now I live in Andorra - and I feel perfect there because of my family, friends and all the people that go there to support me, including the fan club with my brother.

"It's really nice to ride at Montmelo but it is similar to Mugello and for sure it will be difficult to get close to Vale, Jorge and Marc. I hope we can stay in the group just behind the top guys."
