Former Caterham rider Johann Zarco took his new Ajo Kalex to the second fastest lap time, a fraction behind world champion Esteve Rabat, at this week's Valencia test.

After lost track time at last week's Jerez test, the Ajo Motorsport Moto2 project - run by factory KTM Moto3 team manager Aki Ajo - were able to enjoy two days of dry track time at Valencia.

Zarco, who took four podiums and one pole with Caterham's Suter chassis this year, put Ajo's new Kalex-WP suspension package through its paces during his final Moto2 laps of 2014.

"These two days of testing in Valencia have ended well," said the Frenchman. "Yesterday was a little difficult, but today we took an important step forward. The objective that we had before starting the test has been reached, with some fast times and always at the head of the timesheet. Today we were second fastest. We still have room for improvement in terms of the chassis, suspension etc, so we can stay calm and keep working in the same way.

"The most important thing is that we are closing this first part of the preseason with a good feeling about things. I have to learn from the mistakes that I maybe made over these two days and I am sure that the technicians will find improvements to the set-up. I am very happy and hope that in February we can pick up from where we have left things today."

"We can say that this has been a very good start to our new Moto2 project," Aki Ajo declared. "These have been important days for bringing the team together, and both the staff and the rider are getting to know each other. The results have also been very satisfying. Johann has been very consistent with his work, improving every day and setting amazing lap times.

"We still have to continue working, because this is a new project for us, but we have a very good feeling about next season. We have the opportunity to continue working hard during the winter break and arrive at the first test in February even better prepared."

Zarco will be back on-board his Kalex during the first test of 2015 in February.
