Andrea Dovizioso underlined the progress made by Ducati over the winter as the Italian rider blasted to pole position for Sunday's Qatar MotoGP.

Dovizioso posted the fastest lap of the weekend so far on the new GP15 machine in 1m 54.113s at Losail, knocking Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa off the top spot in the dying seconds.

Pedrosa was 0.217s adrift on the RC213V while world champion Marc Marquez completes the front row, 0.317s behind the Ducati of Dovizioso after a lap in 1m 54.437s. Marquez appeared to be on course for pole before losing time through the final section but had to settle for the last place on row one in the end.

Andrea Iannone heads up row two on the second factory Ducati, providing further evidence of the Italian manufacturer's progress with the new GP15 after Iannone and Dovizioso had earlier led a Ducati one-two in FP4.

Yonny Hernandez was next on the Pramac Ducati (1m 54.675s) with Jorge Lorenzo the leading Yamaha rider in sixth, rounding out the second row with a time of 1m 54.711s, which leaves him trailing Dovizioso by 0.598s.

Britain's Bradley Smith qualified in seventh to head up row three after squeezing into Q2 with a flying late lap in Q1, progressing to the final qualifying session along with Danilo Petrucci (Pramac Ducati), who was quickest in the first qualifying session.

Monster Tech 3 Yamaha rider Smith lapped in 1m 54.732 as he finished only 0.021s behind the factory Yamaha of Lorenzo and ahead of Valentino Rossi in eighth place (1m 54.851s). Q1 frontrunner Petrucci was ninth fastest as he gained a third row start.

Smith's team-mate, Pol Espargaro, and Suzuki's Aleix Espargaro were 10th and 11th fastest respectively, while Cal Crutchlow completes the fourth row on the CWM LCR Honda after crashing out at speed unhurt at Turn 14.

It was a disappointing outcome for the British rider, who had finished second quickest behind Marquez in FP3 on the RC213V.

Rookie Maverick Vinales, who was denied a place in Q2 by Smith, was 13th on the second of the Suzuki Ecstar machines, closely followed by Scott Redding on the EG 0,0 Marc VDS Honda (1m 55.428s), with Hector Barbera claiming the last place on row five on the Avintia Racing Ducati.

Barbera's team-mate Mike de Meglio, was 16th quickest head of Aspar Honda's Nicky Hayden and Stefan Bradl on the Athina Forward Yamaha, while premier class newcomer Eugene Laverty will make his MotoGP race debut from the seventh row on the second of the Aspar Hondas, where he is joined by Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Honda RC213V-RS) and Aprilia's Alvaro Bautista.
