Danilo Petrucci upstaged Jorge Lorenzo to head the day two times at the Sepang MotoGP Test, setting his fastest lap using the soft rear tyre before it was withdrawn by Michelin.

MotoGP's new official tyre supplier took the decision to pull the soft rear compound following a frightening crash involving Loris Baz, who came off on the main straight at around 180mph following a suspected tyre failure, but fortunately walked away from the incident, which caused a delay of more than an hour.

Petrucci's time of 2m 00.095s set on the Octo Pramac Yaknich Ducati GP15 gave him the top spot by only 0.060s from Lorenzo, who posted his time on the Movistar Yamaha using the hard rear.

"I'm happy for this result. We were quick and we made the most of the situation considered what has happened with Loris Baz," said Petrucci.

"It's nice to set the fastest lap time although obviously it is not entirely representative. To end the day in first place, however, gives much satisfaction, even to the team who did a brilliant job.

"In the afternoon I could not go fast as hoped and this remains an important goal that we will try to get tomorrow."

Petrucci said he is growing in confidence with the Desmosedici GP15 and the Michelin tyres but has stated his aim of building further on his progress on the final day of the test on Wednesday at the Malaysian track.

"Improvements? Yes, compared to Monday we have made progress. The confidence with the bike and the tires is growing and electronics is improving too," he said.

"But we are still far from the top riders: tomorrow we'll try to get closer."

His team-mate, Britain's Scott Redding, lapped in 2m 01.049s as he slotted into ninth place overall on day two and seventh on the combined standings.
