Andrea Iannone expressed mild surprise at the feeling offered by Michelins tyres at the Circuit of the Americas as he placed a promising second fastest in FP2.

The Italian was one of many who struggled to find a suitable feeling with the front tyre a week ago in Argentina, but in Austin he not only said the feeling was much improved, but tyre wear on the rear was also impressive.

"It's not so bad," he said on Friday evening. "The feeling with the tyre is not so bad. It's a surprise because after Argentina it was difficult for everybody during the weekend, especially to manage the tyres. In particular the front.

"In this track it's like in Qatar and the situation is very good. Also I think because the track is more clean compared to Argentina and this helps a lot the tyres and the rider.

Iannone was the only rider to lap the lengthy track in Austin within three quarters of a second of Marc Marquez, the man who has won each of the three MotoGP races held here in quite dominant fashion.

"For sure we try to improve in every session but in FP2 we started with new tyres but didn't change all practice. We finish with used tyres and improve in the last two laps. This is a very, very good point for us. My ideal [lap] is very close to Marc. It has three tenths more.

"For sure we'll try to improve for tomorrow. The engineers, I have some problems after the half corner [mid-corner]. The bike was a little bit difficult for the turning. We want to try and improve tomorrow and in this part.

"Especially in T3 because in the braking point my feeling isn't very good. For sure I want to improve in this area. This is my work. I'll focus on the data on the telemetry and I want to understand a little bit better this point."
