Pipped to the top spot by just 0.078s in FP1, Jorge Lorenzo turned the tables on Maverick Vinales in the afternoon session.

The pair were the only riders to lead Free Practice 2 at their home event, world champion Lorenzo leading the way for all but a five-minute window in the closing stages when Vinales became the first rider to break the 1m 42s mark.

But Lorenzo responded with two improvements of his own, culminating in a 1m 41.712s flyer. That put the Movistar Yamaha rider 0.242s clear of Vinales (who qualified second last season) and 0.299s ahead of the top Honda rider... Cal Crutchlow.

The Englishman advanced from ninth place in FP1 (+0.9s) to finish the session one place ahead of factory Repsol Honda star Dani Pedrosa. Another Englishman, Scott Redding, also enjoyed a promising start by being the top Ducati rider in fifth place as Valentino Rossi completed the top six (+0.584s).

Hector Barbera made up for an out-lap fall in FP1 to put his Avintia Ducati into seventh place, ahead of factory stars Andrea Iannone (Ducati) and Marc Marquez (Honda). Marquez saved a massive front-end moment during FP2, a graphical illustration of the handling problems that left him 0.773s from Lorenzo.

Andrea Dovizioso completed the top ten, with Yonny Hernandez (Aspar) and last year's pole sitter Aleix Espargaro (Suzuki) the final riders within one-second of the top. Birthday boy Eugene Laverty was 14th, just ahead of Tech 3's Pol Espargaro.

Espargaro, Alvaro Bautista (Aprilia) and Bradley Smith (Tech 3) were the only riders not to improve their lap time this afternoon. Bautista fell early in the session, with Jack Miller hitting the gravel for the second time today.

Miller's injured team-mate Tito Rabat - who escaped further injury in FP1 - was 20th, half-a-second ahead of only the struggling Smith.

Ducati test rider Michele Pirro was 17th quickest, in place of the injured Loris Baz at Avintia.
