Marc Marquez was up to his old tricks on Sunday afternoon, taking his package to its limits - and beyond - to top the extended MotoGP warm-up session in Qatar.

The Spaniard rattled off a succession of fast laps early into the 30 minutes, ensuring his place at the top of the time sheets, before losing the front of his Honda RC213V at turn 14. Thankfully, Marquez was unharmed in the fall.

Andrea Dovizioso used the half hour to sample soft and medium rear tyre combinations, and showed a fair turn of pace on both. The Italian was 0.189s off Marquez by the end.

The top two were the only men to lap in the 1m 55s, suggesting the 3.3-mile track is fairly dirty after yesterday's deluge of rain.

Rookie Johann Zarco continued his fine form by placing third on the medium rear, ahead of the impressive Aleix Espargaro, another man to test the soft rear tyre through the session.

Pre-season sensation Alvaro Bautista used a soft front-soft rear combination to set the fifth fastest time, ahead of pole sitter Maverick Vi?ales in sixth (medium rear).

Jonas Folger was the second of the class rookies in seventh ahead of Andrea Iannone, Jorge Lorenzo and the impressive Karel Abraham.

Like Dovizioso, Lorenzo tried both the soft and medium rear tyres during the half-hour session, suggesting he remains undecided for the race.

The appeared to be no miracle cure for Valentino Rossi, who starts the race from tenth place on the fourth row. The Italian was a distant 13th, close to a second slower than Marquez's quickest pace.

But times were close. Jack Miller in 17th was just 1.030s off the quickest time of the day.
