The World 250cc Champion Daijiro Katoh put on a new pair of boots to make his MotoGP debut at Suzuka, riding the NSR two-stroke Honda. He certainly looked the part as he took to the track in front of the home crowd. However the boots , which like all new shoes were a little stiff , caused him to change down twice instead of once and crash into the gravel after the first couple of laps into his MotoGP debut.

Katoh, who has won four 250cc Japanese Grands Prix at Suzuka, was unhurt and finally qualified on the second row of the grid in sixth place. He finished the race in tenth place picking up six points.
