Despite losing his provisional pole time in the middle stages of today's final 125cc qualifying session at Estoril, Alex de Angelis came out fighting on his final run - returning to the top, then smashing the competition with ever better lap times.

Yesterday, de Angelis held off title pretenders Dani Pedrosa and Stefano Perugini, for the overnight top spot, while Simone Corsi was the surprise package of the session, qualifying fourth fastest despite crashing out on the last lap after a tangle with Mika Kallio.

Casey Stoner also fell, further injuring his right collarbone and almost certainly ruling himself out for the rest of the weekend.

Meanwhile, 125cc World Champion Arnaud Vincent marked his return to Aprilia with a provisional third row start in twelfth, whilst Youichi Ui - whose ride Vincent took - qualified 17th in his first outing on a Gilera.

De Angelis took advantage of the increasingly grippy track surface to better his Friday time within the first ten minutes of today's final session, but Assen winner Steve Jenkner would go 0.187secs better to steal the top spot by the halfway mark.

The German maintained control until the last runs began, when de Angelis firstly took revenge with a stunning lap that put him 0.53secs ahead of the field - then he smashed that mark by a full second - putting pole well beyond reach.

Pedrosa improved his already considerable championship chances by jumping to second on his thirteenth and final lap, but was still 0.5secs behind the flying green Aprilia of de Angelis. The Spaniard's main title rival, Perugini, completes the front row in fourth, behind the in-form Lorenzo.

Further back, series veteran Ui took personal revenge on Vincent by qualifying one place ahead of him in twelfth. Top KTM was the injured Kallio in nineteenth.
