Max Biaggi benefited from Repsol Honda rider Nicky Hayden's engine settings to put his 'customer' spec Camel Pramac Pons RCV onto a provisional front row start, with fourth in Motegi first qualifying.

"This morning we had some problems which disappeared this afternoon because the Honda technicians modified the engine's electronic mapping and used the settings Hayden had used during free practice," explained the Roman. "I am surprised at how much the performance of the engine can change with just a few modifications to the electronics.

"Now we have a good basis to work from, although we must concentrate on getting the maximum out of the bike. I would also like to say that this is the occasion where I have felt most comfortable riding the new bike and I hope that tomorrow I can improve my times and get more feeling with the bike and the set-up," added Max.
