Andrea Dovizioso confirmed his status as the number one rider in the 125cc class with victory today at Phillip Island, just a week after being crowned World Champion in Malaysia.

The Italian fought throughout the race with fellow teenagers Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner, the latter riding despite injuring his foot injury after a 200kph fall the morning warm-up.

Dovizioso made his break on the final lap to leave Lorenzo and Stoner to fight it out for second place. The KTM rider took second from Lorenzo into the hairpin, then it was a slipstreaming race to the finish with Stoner and Lorenzo side-by-side at the finish line, just 0.124s behind winner Dovizioso.

Official video replays could not separate the pair and Lorenzo was awarded second place because he had recorded a faster lap than Stoner during the race.

"I'm really surprised, before the race I didn't think I could make the top ten because of the pain in my left foot," said home hero Casey. "I just needed a little more speed to stay in the slipstream.

"I don't understand why Lorenzo was slowing down in the middle of the race, Andrea and I nearly hit him a couple of times which was a problem. If I knew I had to get the fastest lap to be second in a photo-finish I would have gone for it, it's the first I've heard of that rule. I don't agree with that," he added.
