Bridgestone might be favourite to win the newly announced MotoGP single tyre contract for 2009, but it is playing its cards close to its chest.

"We acknowledge and respect the decision from FIM that there will be a single tyre rule in MotoGP from 2009," a Bridgestone spokesman told "We will now discuss this matter internally before deciding how we will proceed, bearing in mind the proposal deadline of next Friday."

Sunday's FIM announcement revealed that a single tyre rule would be introduced in MotoGP 'for safety and cost reasons'. Tyre manufacturers wishing to bid for the contract must submit a proposal by October 3, with the winner to be announced by October 18th at the latest.

Bridgestone is presently the exclusive tyre supplier to the Formula One World Championship and has won 12 of the 15 MotoGP rounds so far this season.

The Japanese manufacturer, which supplies 12 out of the 18 full time MotoGP riders, won its second consecutive MotoGP World Championship with Valentino Rossi at Motegi on Sunday.

Michelin released an official statement saying that it is 'examining the opportunities offered by these new regulations and will make an announcement in the next few days as to whether or not the company will tender to supply tyres to the premier class championship that Michelin has won on 26 occasions since 1973'.

Despite its illustrious premier-class history, and the claimed safety and cost reasons behind the new rule, many believe the single tyre decision has actually been made as a result of Michelin's inconsistent tyre performance during the past two seasons.

Both Bridgestone and Michelin had wanted open tyre competition to continue.
