Danilo Petrucci does not expect to use the new Ducati 'downforce' fairing at Silverstone, and perhaps the rest of the MotoGP season.

The Pramac Ducati rider explained that a lack of top speed when using the device, combined with only having one new fairing available, means he would prefer to have both machines in the same (standard) set-up.

"Austria was not a good weekend for us," the Italian said. "We struggled a lot with the wings, especially for maximum speed with the new fairing. Maybe I am too big. My shoulders are too big for that fairing and I lost too much.

"Anyway, my bike stopped after three laps in the race. There was not a failure; the bike recognised the engine problem and called me into the pits. We had put a new engine on Saturday morning, so we don't understand why we were always last or more-or-less last on the maximum speed.

"So for that reason, we decided not to use the new fairing here [at Silverstone]. Especially because I have only one of them and if I crash in FP4, qualifying or warm-up I can destroy my whole weekend."

The new fairing was officially introduced at Brno following a promising test with Petrucci and test rider Michele Pirro at Misano during the summer break. Jorge Lorenzo ran it from the outset, with Petrucci (after a brief run in Brno) and Dovizioso then selecting it in Austria.

"In the Misano test the maximum speed was not so different, but in Austria we didn’t have the chance to make a comparison. We only see that with the new engine and new fairing we were last on maximum speed in Austria and it was a problem," Petrucci explained.

"Anyway, I don't know if Jorge or Dovi will use the new fairing here, but in my box I think 99% I will use the old fairing. Unless I have some advice from Ducati, but at the moment our plan is to continue with the old fairing."

For the rest of the year?

"At the moment, yes. Unless we receive another [new fairing], because with only one piece it's very difficult to continue. As I told you, if I crash late in the weekend, I would have to jump on the old fairing bike and it's a different set-up, different feeling.

"So I prefer to build a weekend working with two bikes the same to cut the set-up time."

Petrucci added that the downforce offered by the new fairing is more of use to Lorenzo.

"For Jorge the situation is better because he needs more stability on the front. He is very fast but he needs kilometres on this bike to understand... Me and Dovizioso we don’t need more support on the front, more stability. We need other things at the moment.

"So I will continue with the old fairing and I cannot wait to be on track this weekend, to try to stay again in the positions that I want. The first 6-7.

"I feel positive this weekend. It's a very special track. I like this track, but it's very tricky. It's very difficult to understand and be fast in all the circuit. You have very different kinds of corner. So it's always difficult to set-up the bike."

Petrucci claimed his first MotoGP podium with second place in the wet 2015 British MotoGP. He has finished on the rostrum twice so far this season, running the GP17 as factory stars Lorenzo and Dovizioso.
