Pramac Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci showed his wet weather class once more as he claimed another rostrum finish at Motegi in Japan.

Petrucci has been edging ever closer to his maiden MotoGP victory but the Italian faced a familiar problem in his quest to achieve the feat on Sunday, with Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Marquez standing in his way.

“I’m really happy and when I was in front I start to think about my first win, but there are always two problems – Dovi and Marc, always the same two!” Petrucci said.

“Anyway I am really happy compared to the other two podiums at Misano and Assen, where I lost the victory at the last lap. Today, the last lap for me was impossible and I decide to make a gamble before the race with the extra soft tyre.

“At the beginning the bike was very good and not pushing 100 per-cent, I just have more than two seconds of gap. Then at the end I had a lot of spinning at the rear and conditions were critical, especially on the straight I couldn’t open all the throttle because there was a lot of spin and slide.”

Petrucci had a ringside seat as he watched Dovizioso and Marquez battle for the victory at Motegi and while he craves a breakthrough win himself, the 26-year-old is happy with how the 2017 season has panned out so far.

“Marc and Dovi did an incredible race, especially at the end, still pushing until the last lap, and it was fun to watch from behind. I’m happy for this result,” he said.

“Essentially I’m here to try to win and it has been a good season, very good results; unfortunately I got a lot of zero points in some races but that is part of the game – sometimes I crash, sometimes the bike was broken. Anyway we are preparing well for next season and maybe we can fight for a better position in the championship.

“We are really happy for this season and now there are three races where I enjoy the tracks so we can make it again.”
