"I think in this track, with this asphalt and the tyre we have, it worked [better] because there isn't grip and so it was very difficult to manage the slide.

"When the grip is lower, you go slower and are always on the limit. So I think if you brake a bit straight, it can help you. Especially if you are only losing one tenth a lap.

"It's small things, but it's important for me and my team to understand to try to approach even better the next weekends. Small things can make a big difference."

The Jerez collision combined with Dovizioso's own mistakes at Le Mans and Catalunya mean that he is now equal on points with Lorenzo, but 49 behind Marquez with twelve rounds to go.

Is Dovizioso still in title contention?

"I think so. I mean if you are objective in this moment, 49 points, a lot of riders in front of me, Marc is very consistent, fast everywhere, no.

"But I don’t think that’s the reality because every race, everything can happen. Because it's easy to make a mistake, everybody is on the limit, the weather can create a different situation, and, all the fast riders on top of the championship are crazy!

"So it can create a lot of strange situations. Yes, the reality is difficult, but there are a lot of points left."

Dovizioso ruled out taking a 'win or bust' approach to the forthcoming races.

"My approach is always thinking about the championship. If I fight for the championship or for another position, I always race for the championship.

"For me it's stupid, especially with this tyre, to think about just the race and make crazy things to try to get the result every race.

"So even if I have 49 points to Marc, always I will race for the championship."

Lorenzo is leaving for Honda at the end of the season, with Danilo Petrucci joining Dovizioso at Ducati in 2019.

Is Dovi's main job now to finish above Jorge in the championship?

"No. The main job is to win. Second is this."

Ducati will not stay for Monday's post-race test at Catalunya.
