Marquez had the surgery at Hospital Universitari Dexeus, in Barcelona, with the operation performed by MotoGP’s Dr Xavier Mir with assistant from Dr Victor Marlet and Dr Teresa Marlet.

The operation aimed to fix the Repsol Honda rider’s recurring dislocation problem with his left shoulder which he suffered with throughout the season - including during his 2018 title celebrations in Motegi plus a qualifying crash at the season finale in Valencia.

Marquez will be kept in hospital for 48 hours to start his recovery before a six-week rehabilitation at his Cervera home.

The 25-year-old hopes to be fully fit in time for the first 2019 test at Sepang, a shakedown test, on February 1-3 – in just over eight weeks’ time.
