Jorge Lorenzo held off team-mate Valentino Rossi to score his fourth MotoGP win in a row at home in Catalunya, while reigning champion Marc Marquez crashed out for the third time this season.

In a worst case scenario for his rivals, Lorenzo surged past the Suzukis of Aleix Espargaro and Maverick Vinales to take the race lead into turn one.

Marquez was able to muscle his way through to second soon after and was doing his best to prevent the Yamaha rider escaping. But a moment under braking on lap 3 of 25 saw him almost clip Lorenzo at the end of the back straight - then spear into the gravel and out of the race.

While the Repsol Honda rider threw his hands to the sky in frustration, Lorenzo looked set to romp to victory - but team-mate Valentino Rossi, fifth on the opening lap, closed to just over one-second from the Spaniard in the final stages.

It made for a tense finish but Lorenzo remained out of reach for not only his fourth successive win, but having led every lap in those four events.

Completing the podium was Marquez's Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa, who celebrated his first rostrum since arm pump surgery but was almost 20s from Lorenzo.

The race took place in the hottest temperatures of the weekend and Marquez was one of seven riders to fall.

Cal Crutchlow's grand prix lasted just a few corners before contact with Aleix Espargaro saw him slide off. Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso fell shortly after Marquez while holding third, while both Espargaro brothers failed to finish - Pol slipping out of seventh early on and an exasperated Aleix tumbling from fourth in the closing stages.

That handed the position to Ducati's Andrea Iannone, with Tech 3 Yamaha's Bradley Smith, Suzuki's rookie star Vinales and Marc VDS Honda's Scott Redding completing the top seven.

Stefan Bradl was the top Open rider in eighth for Forward Yamaha, his best result of the year, while Pramac's Danilo Petrucci and Aprilia's Alvaro Bautista rounded out the top ten.

Rossi's title advantage has now been trimmed to just a single point over Lorenzo, with Marquez a massive 69 points adrift heading into Assen.
