The 51st running of the Daytona 500 has been halted after the expected rain shower arrived at the Daytona International Speedway.

Rain was known to be in the air before the race and finally arrived after 152 laps of the race, with the red flags being shown and the field pulling onto pitlane.

At the crucial moment, Matt Kenseth leads the field having been given a push from Reed Sorenson that allowed him to get a run on Elliott Sadler to hit the front of the field. Sadler slipped back to fifth place and at the time of the stoppage, Kenseth leads from Kevin Harvick, AJ Allmendinger and Clint Bowyer.

The race itself was hit by controversy on lap 124 after a multi-car incident triggered by Dale Earnhardt Jr and Brian Vickers.

Coming along the back-straight, Earnhardt tried to get a run on Vickers who blocked to the inside and pushed Earnhardt towards the yellow line. Contact between the pair as Earnhardt tried to move back behind the Red Bull Toyota saw Vickers tipped into a spin in front of the field which also caught out Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Robby Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Scott Speed and long-time leader Kyle Busch - who had headed the field for 88 laps before being caught up in someone elses accident.

The field is currently waiting on pit road to see if the race will be restarted.
