Early morning rain at the North Carolina Speedway saw the first NASCAR Winston Cup practice session of the day cancelled and an extra 15-minutes added to final 'Happy Hour' practice, where Jeff Burton proved fastest.

Burton made the most of the limited track time on offer as he turned a quickest lap of 24.089secs in the #99 CITGO Roush Racing Ford, more than a full tenth quicker than Rusty Wallace and Bobby Labonte.

Friday's Bud Pole winner for the 393-lap Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 Ryan Newman set fourth fastest time in the #12 ALLTEL Dodge ahead of Elliott Sadler, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Bill Elliott and Mark Martin.

Defending event Champion Johnny Benson was only 32nd fastest while February's Subway 400 winner Dale Jarrett was 18th quickest.

Matt Kenseth's weekend showed few signs of taking a giant step forward as he set 27th fastest speed although front row starter Brian Vickers learned the differences between qualifying and race set-up as he set a lowly 40th fastest time.
