After running second quickest in Friday's opening practice session and then qualifying third in Bud Pole qualifying later in the day Denny Hamlin went top of the charts in Saturday's first session at the Dover International Speedway.

Looking to regain the kind of consistency that has kept him at the sharp end of the Nextel Cup grid for much of the past two seasons Hamlin posted a fastest time of 23.849secs around the one-mile concrete oval, one tenth quicker than Bud Pole winner Jimmie Johnson in yet another Chevrolet dominated session.

Hamlin's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Tony Stewart was third fastest with his Dover nemesis Kurt Busch fourth quickest in the #2 Penske Racing Dodge. Johnson's Hendrick teammate Casey Mears rounded out the top five with Mark Martin sixth for the #01 DEI/Ginn team.

After being blown out of the water on Friday Saturday morning wasn't much better for the Ford runners with Greg Biffle's #16 Roush-Fenway Racing example one of only two blue ovals in the top 13 in seventh position. Behind Biffle championship contenders Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and defending Dodge Dealers 400 winner Jeff Burton completed the top ten with June Dover winner Martin Truex Jr, last Sunday's victor Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch rounding out the top 13.

All 12 Chase for the Championship contenders finished the session inside the top 20 with Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards the lowest placed in 17th and 18th places respectively.
