Clay double sees Monger close on Honda title.

Billy Monger took a giant step towards the 2010 Super One Cadet Honda title with a double victory in the penultimate round of the championship at Clay Pigeon.

Monger, last year's fifth seed, will head to the final round of the championship at Buckmore Park in early October with a 43 point lead (before dropped scores) over his nearest rival Dave Wooder thanks to his double victory at the Dorset venue.

Although Monger's margin over Wooder is just 30 points with each drivers worst round score taken into account, Monger simply needs to stay out of trouble at Buckmore in order to seal the title.

After heat finishes of first, second and fourth gave him pole position for the first point-scoring final at the short but flowing circuit Monger critically managed to break the tow of the chasing pack and escape to a two second win over Wooder, who had to overcome some stiff resistance from Robbie Gallier in the opening laps.

Series rookie Gallier held on to third despite Harvey Meek's best efforts with O Plate winner Luke Knott completing the top five.

If the first final had been a cakewalk for Monger the second final was anything but as Wooder got the jump at the start to take the lead. For 19 laps Monger followed the leader, the pair pulling away from the rest of the field until they were five seconds clear. Then, on the 20th and final lap Monger made his move to grab a late, late triumph by less than two tenths of a second and further press home his championship advantage.

Wooder's second runner-up finish of the weekend may not have done his championship tilt any good but it helps keep him at arms length clear of Knott in the points race. Knott finished the second final in fifth place, behind Gallier and Jack Evans but that became fourth when Gallier was penalised back to tenth place for an early race incident with Meek. Jack McCarthy finished fifth.
