Having missed the Plains Rally in September, round nine of the Silkolene 1400 Championship, MG ZR driving Nathan Crewe and navigator John Connor decided to contest the Bulldog Clubman Rally last weekend.

The plan was to gain more competitive mileage under their belt in order to maintain the good form they have been experiencing, for the season closer in two weeks time, and this they certainly achieved.

Starting from Newtown the crews made their way into the forests around Machynlleth and Dolgellau, competing on classic stages local to MG ZR Super 1600 driver Gwyndaf Evans.

A good start saw the MG ZR pair stake a position in the top 15, amongst much more powerful four-wheel drive machinery. The cold but dry weather continued throughout the day and the team pushed on getting faster with each stage.

A spin on one of the morning stages dropped the Bromsgrove driver a couple of places, but a good performance clawed back some of the time that had been lost. At the finish in Shrewsbury Nathan and John were confirmed as class leaders by over three and a half minutes and secured a place in the top ten overall.

Nathan remarked, 'The MG ZR 1.4 K-Series has performed faultlessly, it has put much more powerful cars to shame by claiming a place in the top ten. This is my best performance yet; it has given me much more confidence to mix it with the Silkolene 1400 Championship boys in a fortnights time'.

The next rally for the pair is the season closer, The Cambrian Rally based in Llandudno, North Wales 18th October 2003.
