Talented teenager Matthew Wilson and co-driver Scott Martin suffered serious injuries after crashing out of the Rally of Wales on the final stage of day one.

The Eddie Stobart Motorsport crew plunged off the road at a reported sixth-gear corner, ending up embedded deep in the undergrowth. Eighteen-year old Wilson had been lying second to Austin McHale at the time of the accident, but ended his day in hospital after being diagnosed with a broken right wrist and left forearm, as well as sundry damage to his right knee. Martin sustained a broken left leg, with additional fractures to his right leg.

Both crew members underwent surgery on Saturday night, and are not in any danger.
