Meilyr Evans just lost out on taking his maiden win in the Fiesta SportingTrophy on the Malton Forest Rally last weekend.

Meilyr and Alastair Fisher both finished the event, the final round in the FSTUK series, with exactly the same time, but the latter took the victory as he was fastest on the first of the eight competitive stages.

Despite having to settle for the runners-up spot though, the GEMsport man was still pleased, especially as the points haul for P2 ensured he took third overall in the FST UK standings.

"It was a tough rally," said Meilyr. "The conditions were really wet and slippery but everything went really well from the start and I really enjoyed the stages."

GEMsport boss Gwyndaf Evans meanwhile was also very pleased as it brings 2008, the team's first year, to a close on a positive note.

"It has been an amazing season for GEMsport," added Gwyndaf, who was on hand to congratulate Meilyr on his best result to date.

"To have secured championship victory with one round to go [with Elfyn Evans - my son] was amazing and then for Meilyr to perform so well in the Fiesta this weekend was tremendous.

"Getting both cars into the top three of such a competitive championship is quite an achievement for our first year."

For the record, Elfyn Evans, who took the FSTUK title on the previous round in Scotland and who was recently handed a one-year driving ban, did not take part in the event.
