Jeremy McWilliams will make his national road racing debut at the Armoy meeting in Northern Ireland next month fresh from his victory at the North West 200.

The former 250cc Grand Prix winner claimed his maiden road racing victory at the North West in May in the Supertwin 650 class a year after making his debut at the event.

McWilliams is now preparing to compete in his first national road race meeting at Armoy on July 27, when he will again ride in the Supertwin race on a 650 Kawasaki ER6 supplied by former top road racer Ryan Farquhar.

However, the 49-year-old has stressed that he is not embarking on a full-scale road racing venture in his twilight years in the sport and insists he is merely competing at Armoy 'for a bit of fun'.

McWilliams said: "It's only for a bit of fun but I've been getting phone calls from other clubs asking if I'm going road racing and do I want bikes!

"I think people are taking it out of context a little bit. I'm only doing this for a bit of craic to be honest - I'm not starting a road racing career."

McWilliams completed a parade lap at Armoy last year and enjoyed the layout of the three-mile circuit and the atmosphere around the event.

"Armoy is a really exciting circuit. I thoroughly enjoyed the parade lap and the whole event at Armoy last year," he said.

"It took me back to when I was a teenager going to the road races and reminded me of the much-loved heritage of the sport, its great atmosphere, the brilliant buzz and fantastic road racing."

The Armoy race meeting in County Antrim in Northern Ireland was first held in 2009 and has quickly become one of the country's leading events.

The sport is hugely popular in the area, which is where the legendary 'Armoy Armada' of Joey Dunlop, Mervyn Robinson, Frank Kennedy and Jim Dunlop honed their skills on the country roads around the picturesque village.

Armoy attracts some of the biggest names in road racing, with Michael Dunlop dominating his home event last year.

William Dunlop and Guy Martin are regulars at the event and Conor Cummins made his debut at Armoy in 2012.
