The Isle of Wight lifted the Premier League Knockout Cup after a thrilling battle with holders Sheffield at Owlerton last night. The Islanders won 95-91 on aggregate after holding the mighty Tigers to a one-point victory on the night.

The meeting had everything - controversial refereeing decisions, mechanical breakdowns, crashes and some great racing for another bumper crowd. It was always going to be a close affair and there is no doubt that Aussie Adam Shields (17) and guest Paul Pickering (12) won the tie for the visitors.

Reserve James Birkinshaw was the top man for Sheffield with 11+2 on a night when heat leaders Sean Wilson, Ricky Ashworth and Brent Werner managed only two wins between them.

Jubilant Isle of Wight star Adam Shields described the Knockout Cup success a 'magnificent achievement'. He said: "It was a great night, not just for myself but for everyone connected with the club. It's a maginficent achievement. We haven't always ridden as a team this year but we did on this occasion and we got our rewards with the cup. Sheffield is a tough place to ride."
